Surfing in Médoc Atlantique
From Lacanau to Cordouan, surfing is the star sport of the past years. Just imagine: a whole host of beachbreak surf spots, spread over 120 km of coastline, with good weather conditions and in a preserved environment! From Lacanau to Verdon-sur-Mer, beginners or experienced surfers, you are guaranteed to find the waves for you. Festivals, competitions, exhibitions, surfing is a way of life and a state of mind.
The history of surfing
And so it all began...Not many people know how surfing came to be so popular in Médoc. It all goes back to the time of the "Tontons surfeurs" from Biarritz. Surfing was first practiced at the end of the 50s, and then became more widespread in the 70s thanks to better quality and more variety of waves, and especially thanks to improved equipment.
At the end of the 60s, surfing arrived in Médoc! Two local men, Marcel Monge and Francis Mongard, had met the "Tontons surfeurs" and decided to bring surfing to Médoc for the very first time. Firstly to Vendays-Montalivet,and then to Lacanau Océan.
Surfing, a way of life
Here, we live and breathe surfing!Surfing is more than just a sport, it's a way of life and a state of mind. So here, it is celebrated! You will literally feel the surf vibrations here, from photograph and painting exhibitions, to surf competitions and festivals ranging from small private affairs, to big well-known events. Which event is a must? Obviously the Caraïbos Lacanau Pro! For 2 weeks, the town of Lacanau lives and breathes surfing, even more so than usual.

What's my favourite session? The one at the end of the day with friends, watching the sun disappear into the horizon and taking advantage of the unique moments behind the waves, with the impression of being at the ends of the earth!
The Caraïbos Lacanau Pro
In 1979, the famous "Lacanau Pro" was launched. It was the first professional surfing competition in France. Still today, surfing pros come together at this event to compete in the second round of the Championship Tour. Famous surfers such as Tom Curren, Martin Potter, Damien Hardman, Kelly Slater and Gabriel Medina have competed here.
