Dune Saint-Nicolas

Dune Saint Nicolas at Le Verdon-sur-Mer: a natural treasure at the tip of the Médoc

At the very tip of the Médoc, where the land meets the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde estuary, stands the majestic Dune Saint Nicolas, an unspoilt site worth discovering during your visit to Le Verdon-sur-Mer. Just a stone's throw from popular Atlantic beaches, this protected natural site is home to remarkable biodiversity and offers superb panoramic views.

An ecologically rich site

Much more than just a beach, Dune Saint Nicolas is an incredibly rich natural environment. Its fragile and complex dune belt is home to numerous plant and animal species, all adapted to this demanding environment. The dunes play a crucial role in protecting the coastline, forming a natural barrier against storms and erosion. It's also a fragile ecosystem, where every element contributes to the balance of the environment.

A safe, family-friendly beach

In addition to its ecological richness, Dune Saint Nicolas boasts a supervised beach in summer, ideal for families in search of relaxation. The vast expanses of fine sand and cool ocean waters make it a popular swimming spot. The site is easily accessible and offers a calmer atmosphere, away from the often crowded beaches, while guaranteeing safety thanks to summer surveillance.

A unique panorama of the Verdon-sur-Mer lighthouses

The view from the top of the dune is breathtaking: an unobstructed view of the Cordouan lighthouse, nicknamed the “King of Lighthouses”, which proudly watches over the entrance to the Gironde estuary. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its iconic silhouette is a real eye-catcher. But another, more discreet lighthouse lurks in Cordouan's shadow: the Phare Saint Nicolas, located just off the dune. Although not accessible to visitors, it remains a historic landmark and a symbol of local navigation, so don't hesitate to seek it out!

Discover this coastline in a different way

Given the fragility of this environment, the preservation of Dune Saint Nicolas is essential. That's why, every summer, the CPIE Médoc (Centre Permanent d'Initiatives pour l'Environnement) offers educational guided tours to raise visitors' awareness of the importance of this ecosystem. These tours enable visitors to discover the local flora and fauna, as well as to understand the environmental issues involved in preserving the coastline.

Adopt a respectful approach during your visit

The dune is a vulnerable environment. By adopting a few simple gestures, you can contribute to its preservation. Stay on the marked paths to avoid damaging the vegetation and dunes, and be sure to pick up all your garbage so as not to disturb the natural balance. Let the CPIE's programs be your guide to discovering the dunes in a different way, and enjoy the coastline with an awareness of the impact of your actions.

Our advice? Use one of the cycle paths linking Soulac-sur-Mer and Le Verdon-sur-Mer to reach the dune in complete tranquillity, while respecting the environment.
