"The Variante de l'Hôpital, a historic section of the Soulac route, is close to the route taken by the pilgrims of old in the Nord Médoc. Nearly 1000 years ago, thousands of pilgrims from northern Europe landed in Soulac to undertake their pilgrimage to Compostela, Rome or Jerusalem. After their devotions at Sainte-Véronique, they went to the 'Hôpital de la Grayanès' where the Hospitallers of Saint-Jean-de-Jérusalem had founded an important commandery (the 4th of the Order in France).
The chapel of L'Hôpital is the last witness to this.
