La Pointe de Grave

Pointe de Grave: where the ocean and the estuary meet in Verdon-sur-Mer

At the northern tip of the Médoc Atlantique, Pointe de Grave is a beautiful site where the waters of the Gironde estuary, the largest in Europe, and those of the Atlantic Ocean meet. This emblematic place, located in Verdon-sur-Mer, offers a breathtaking panorama of the mouth of this grandiose estuary.

A unique view of the Gironde estuary and the ocean

From Pointe de Grave, your gaze is lost in the immensity of the sea and the estuary. Looking up to sea, you will not fail to see the majestic silhouette of the Cordouan Lighthouse, nicknamed the "King of Lighthouses". Built on a rocky islet, it is the oldest lighthouse in France still in operation, listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 2021. Its strategic position at the entrance to the estuary has made it an essential landmark for sailors for several centuries.

A natural crossroads of great ecological wealth

The Pointe de Grave is much more than just a viewpoint. This place is a true natural crossroads where different ecosystems converge. The meeting of fresh and salt water creates an environment rich in biodiversity, conducive to the observation of seabirds and migratory birds that stop over throughout the year. It is also a privileged point to observe the tidal phenomena and the strength of the currents that shape this unique environment.

A site steeped in history and heritage

The Pointe de Grave also has a rich maritime and military history. During the Second World War, this strategic location was the scene of major battles, and you can still see the remains of the blockhouses that recall this tumultuous past. A few kilometers from the Pointe, the Batterie des Arros is a must-see site if you want to discover the remains of this contrasting period in world history.

A destination for nature and sea lovers

Easily accessible on foot or by bike, the Pointe de Grave is a popular destination for hiking and wide-open spaces enthusiasts. Several trails run along the coast, offering superb views of the estuary and the ocean. For a complete experience, you can even board a boat to reach Royan via the ferry crossing, while enjoying a unique view of the coast and the Cordouan Lighthouse.
