Welcome to Soulac-sur-Mer, a commune with a rich historical and cultural past, famous for its unique heritage. The Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-la-Fin-des-Terres has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998, as part of the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. This monument, witness to centuries of history, attracts many visitors every year. Not far away, the Old Village, with its superb period villas, has earned the town the title of ‘Town of 500 Villas’, a testament to its elegance and timeless charm. Soulac-sur-Mer is not just a modern seaside resort; it is also a historical crossroads. Its origins date back to Roman times, when the town was positioned as a strategic coastal city. Over the centuries, it became a river port under English occupation, then an important religious centre with a Benedictine monastery, attracting pilgrims and travellers on the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela. The 19th century marked a turning point in the town's history. It was at this time that Soulac-sur-Mer adopted its modern face, with the construction of numerous villas, the second homes of the middle classes, which today form the basis of its charm and renown. La Soulacaise lets you relive these different eras as you stroll through some of the town's most emblematic landmarks. During this walk, you'll be invited to discover the basilica, as well as other architectural gems in the town, such as the Benedictine monastery and the historic fountain in Place Clémenceau. From the seafront, you can admire the Cordouan lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in France still in operation, nicknamed the ‘king of lighthouses’ or ‘the Versailles of the Seas’. Soulac-sur-Mer is also marked by historical events and military remains. During your walk, you will discover the replica of the Statue of Liberty and the memorial to the Nord Médoc fortress. Finally, don't miss the Atlantic Wall bunkers, remnants of the period when Soulac-sur-Mer, like other coastal towns, was a strategic point for German troops. Whether you're a history buff, architecture enthusiast or just looking for a pleasant stroll, take advantage of this walk to rediscover this town through its architectural and historical heritage.
