Réserve naturelle des Dunes et Marais d’Hourtin

Réserve Naturelle des Dunes et Marais d'Hourtin: an unspoilt jewel on the Atlantic coast

Located in the heart of the Médoc Atlantique region, the Réserve Naturelle des Dunes et Marais d'Hourtin covers more than 2,150 hectares, offering a diversity of landscapes typical of the sandy coast of Aquitaine. Classified since 2009, the Reserve is home to an exceptional natural heritage and provides a haven for a multitude of animal and plant species.

An area of dunes, marshes and forests

The Reserve features a mosaic of preserved natural environments, from vast sandy beaches to coastal dunes, maritime pine and holm oak forests, wetlands and the magnificent Lac d'Hourtin. This unique site encapsulates the very essence of the Aquitaine landscape, offering visitors a total immersion in the wilderness of the Atlantic coast.

A biodiversity sanctuary worth protecting

Managed by the Office National des Forêts (ONF), the Reserve is subject to rigorous scientific monitoring to preserve its remarkable biodiversity. Among the emblematic species, the European otter, kingfisher and green tree frog find refuge in these wetlands. As for plants, the Royal Osmonds, majestic ferns, adorn the trails and delight botany enthusiasts.

In an effort to protect these fragile ecosystems, strict regulations are in place. Visitors are invited to respect these rules to preserve the reserve's ecological balance. Before your visit, check with the Médoc Atlantique Tourist Offices to find out which areas are accessible and the best practices to follow.

A nature experience for everyone

The Réserve Naturelle des Dunes et Marais d'Hourtin is accessible to hikers, cyclists and horse riders via a number of signposted itineraries. Among the popular starting points, the Contaut, Piqueyrot and Hourtin Plage sites will guide you through varied landscapes, offering striking panoramas between dunes and marshes. The Contaut Lagoon educational trail, accessible to people with reduced mobility and visual impairments, invites you to take a walk in the heart of nature on a wooden footbridge, ideal for observing the local fauna in complete tranquillity.

Eco-responsible guided tours

Throughout the year, the ONF organizes free guided tours for the general public and schoolchildren. These outings provide an opportunity to learn more about the sustainable management of natural environments and the actions taken to preserve them. It's a great opportunity to discover the reserve from an eco-responsible angle and contribute to environmental protection.
