Site archéologique de “La Chapelle Saint Siméon”

La Chapelle Saint Siméon: a journey to the heart of Gallo-Roman history in Jau-Dignac-et-Loirac
Close to the banks of the Gironde estuary, in the village of Jau-Dignac-et-Loirac, lies a fascinating archaeological site: the Chapelle Saint Siméon. Discovered by chance during agricultural work in 2000, this site steeped in history now offers visitors the chance to travel back in time through the remains of a Gallo-Roman temple, a funerary church and the Chapelle Saint Siméon, all showcased in a life-size model.

An exceptional archaeological site in the Médoc Atlantique
The site, located just a few kilometres from the Gironde estuary, is of great historical and cultural importance to the Médoc Atlantique. Although the original ruins have been partially destroyed by the passage of time, the life-size model created in 2016 provides a better understanding of the scale and function of the structures that once stood here. As you explore the site, you can admire the outline of the Gallo-Roman temple, the foundations of the former burial church and the site of the Chapelle Saint Siméon, a local place of worship that has survived the centuries.

The secrets of a Gallo-Roman temple
At the heart of this discovery are the remains of a Gallo-Roman temple, a direct testimony to the Roman presence in the region. This ancient sanctuary, dedicated to a divinity that has now disappeared, is an example of the Roman cultural influence on the indigenous peoples. Archaeologists have uncovered architectural elements that reveal the importance of this sacred site in Gallo-Roman times, marking a historic transition between pagan religious practices and the gradual adoption of Christianity in the region.

The funerary church and Chapelle Saint Siméon: places of worship through the ages
The site's history does not end with Roman times. During the Middle Ages, a funerary church was built on the ruins of the temple. This building served as a place of worship for the inhabitants and played a key role in the community's funeral rites. A few centuries later, the Chapelle Saint Siméon was added to this religious complex, becoming a place of prayer and meditation for the region's faithful.

Today, although these buildings have disappeared, the on-site model gives visitors a better understanding of the structure and layout of these buildings, as well as how they have evolved over the centuries. It offers an immersive reconstruction of the three main historical phases: the Gallo-Roman era, the Middle Ages and the Christian era.

A preserved site accessible to all
Since its development in 2016, the Chapelle Saint Siméon site has become a must-see for history and archaeology enthusiasts. Easily accessible from the Médoc's main roads, it's the perfect place to visit with family, friends or on your own. On-site information panels allow visitors to appreciate the archaeological finds while learning more about local history.

The site is also managed in an eco-responsible way, with preservation measures put in place to protect the remains from the elements and erosion. The chapel and its surroundings are maintained to preserve this unique heritage and pass it on to future generations.
